SCRIPTURE11
My Story

My Story: Hey everybody, I’m Heber (aka “The Rev”) of Scripture 11. I like long walks on the beach, beautiful sunsets...just playin. While I do enjoy the simple things in life, my story is very similar to the many others. I was born in Mexico City, Mexico (Yes, I’m a true Mexican...Viva Mexico!), but I was raised on the East Side of “Tha Funk or Funky Town”, Fort Worth, Texas. Like many kids growing up in a lower class neighborhood, I didn’t have too much. My parents were both around, but my Dad missed out on a lot. I was a decent kid, my Mother filled a huge role in my life growing up and she was always determined to take us to church (1 Peter 3:1 “Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,”). My Dad usually skipped out on church as well as myself. I always remember my Dad drinking with my uncles and his friends at home, before or after soccer games, Christmas and birthday parties and so on. My Grandfather being a former alcoholic, my dad wasn’t quite there, but was on the similar track. Of coarse that caused some problems at home and it wasn’t until the Spring of 1999 that my Dad made the decision to really step up and he accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Being 13, almost 14 years old, I noticed a huge change at home, specifically my Dad. He started becoming a Father to me, my brother and sister and a Husband to my Mother. That summer, my family went on a trip to Mexico and I was the only one to stay behind with my Father. Well, because of the sudden changes (2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”), it sparked an interest in me. “Who is this Jesus?” 18 July 1999, I found out. My Father forced me to go to church that Sunday morning and I felt the call. I can remember fighting the nerves as I walked to the Altar to accept Christ. Once I did and I began to walk back, I could see my Father in tears in his pew. His appearance was always very rock hard and I’d never seen him shed a tear before until that day. He gave me the kind of hug that I’d never felt before and for the first time he told me “Hijo, Te Amo” (Son, I LOVE you). My family has come a very long way (I give Mad Props to Jesus and my Parents) and today, among my personal mentor, Pastor Ely Perez, my Father, Juan R. Perez, is one of my closest spiritual counselors. For those of you that know me personally, you know the hard times I’ve had to face as well as the easy and fun times. One thing I can say is that life as a Christian is hard, but rewarding BEYOND comparison. As Paul wrote in Romans 12:11-14 “NEVER be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, SERVING the Lord. Be joyful in hope, be patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who PERSECUTE you, BLESS AND DO NOT CURSE.” Life is way too short! Enjoy it! Go have FUN and do it the RIGHT way!
